This post is the continuation from my Previous Video Blog where I covered How to Create your Database on Oracle Cloud (OCI ) and I also gave you a task on creating it yourself and then connect to database host so you understand it better.

After posting that video last week, I received a lot of messages in my Facebook Community that you were able to create & connect to database host which is good news and I am excited with your progress but then few of you were unable to connect.

So, In this post, I have Covered Troubleshooting the Database Connectivity On Oracle Cloud (OCI)

Find Database Server Details on Cloud(OCI)

Open the Hamberger menu & Under Database Section, click on Bare Metal, VM & Exadata. Go to the DB System

Database on OCI

You will see the Public & Private IP like below.

Note: If you created your Database with the Public Subnet then only you will get the Public IP

Database Public & Private IP

Public IP & Private IP

A database can be deployed on either Public or Private Subnet.

Note: There are 2 types of Subnet Public & Private (Check more on Subnets here)

Private IP

If you deploy Database on Private Subnet, you only get Private IP of your database host machine. It only accepts connections from machines within the VCN or you can connect to your on-prem network using FastConnect or IPSec VPN via DRG (Dynamic Routing Gateway)

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Private IPPublic IP

When you create a database using Public Subnet, you will be getting Private & Public IP both and you will be able to access your database host machine using Public IP.

In order to connect to Database Host Machine,

  1. It should be in Public Subnet (Note: there are 2 types of Subnet Public & Private) (Check more on Subnets here)
  2. It should have an Internet Gateway associated with Route Table which is open to internet ie CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
  3. It should have a security list, which allows port 22 open from the internet & 1521 to connect to database listener

Note: When you create VCN using default options various resources is by default created by Oracle (Security List, IGW, Route Table).

To know how to create a security list and open port in Oracle Gen2 Cloud check here

Public IP Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Question For You!

What if you have Multiple Routing Table & your request can go by the Two Routes, so which route will Subnet take the precedence?

Leave your Answer in the comment section below

This post covered the First part of Day 1 from our live interactive Oracle DBA to Cloud DBA Training

This post is the continuation from my Previous two video Blogs, In the First Blog I have covered How to Create your Database on Oracle Cloud (OCI ) and I also gave you a task on creating it yourself and then connect to database host so you understand it better, then
In the Second Video Blog, I have covered Troubleshooting the Database Connectivity On Oracle Cloud (OCI)We looked at things like Internet Gateway defined at VCN level then Routing Table for connection from Internet to IGW to Database host and also allowing SSH port 22 & Database listener port 1521 in Security List of Subnet where database is deployed

After posting the previous two blogs, I received a lot of messages in my Facebook Community that they are beginners in Cloud so where they can start with.

Last week we also launched our new batch for Training How to go from DBA to Oracle Cloud DBA in 6 weeks and a lot of you also asked if they can get the glimpse of what to expect or what they should learn or in what order

I thought why not share the first part of Day1 from our DBA to Oracle Cloud DBA in 6 weeks training.

Order To Learn Cloud DBA

If you are planning to learn Cloud DBA, use the below order to learn for better understanding & to clear your concepts.
In this part 1 our Cloud DBA Training, Instructor (Rajeev) starts with 9 Module’s Introduction we cover in this training so you can use this order to learn Cloud DBA

DBA to CLoud DBA Modules

Topics Covered on Day 1

We have covered below topics in brief in our Day 1 Live Interactive session.

Database on Oracle Cloud

Out of these full topic, I am sharing the first two topics

1) Cloud Concepts/Service Models

As a DBA, Apps DBA, System Administrator you should learn both which is IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) the reason is because whatever you building or deploying is over Infrastructure as a Service ie. PaaS always runs on top of IaaS that’s the reason you should have the knowledge of both.

Cloud Service Model

Check about the Cloud Service Models which is the first thing you must learn when starting in Cloud

2) OCI vs OCI-C

Then, he talks about OCI vs OCI- Classic so Oracle has 2 Cloud, Gen 1 Cloud which is OCI-Classic and Gen 2 OCI. OCI Classic is slowly being phased out so all new customers should be moving to OCI. For the same reason, we migrated our DBA to Cloud DBA training from OCI-Classic to OCI where you build, manage & migrate Database on OCI

OCI vs OCI-C

Check more about OCI vs OCI Classic

3) OCI Core Services

In OCI, there are various Services, Compute and two version of that Bare Metal (BM) and Virtual Machine (VM), Storage mainly Block & Object Storage, Networking (so things like VPN, Load Balancer, Firewall, Security List, Fastconnect) Identity & Access Management for Security and REST API to Console as interface to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

OCI Core Services

Check more about Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)building blocks & also here

4) Database Overview & Concepts

He then covers two main categories of Database first User Managed that includes BM Database, VM Database, Exadata Cloud Service, and second type as Autonomous Database and within that ATP & ADW

Database_In_OCI

Check more about Database Types & How To Create Database on Oracle’s Gen2 Cloud (OCI)

Well, that was the first part from Day 1 of recent DBA to Oracle Cloud DBA Training. Now if you want to hear next part i.e. Licensing options of Database on Oracle Cloud or other topics related  database on Cloud or any other topic on Oracle Cloud then leave a comment about the topic

3) Select the Compartment, in which you want to create the Compute machine

A compartment is a  logical container within your account used to store Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Resources created within that compartment (such as compute, storage, and network) and you impose some policies to that compartment, which restricts who can use the resources created within than compartment other than administrators of your account.

By default, your instance launches in the current compartment, and the resources you choose also come from the current compartment.

To know more about the Compartment, check here

Create Compute Instance in OCI

4) To create a Linux or Windows Machine, click on Create Instance. Fill up the required details

  • When you click Change Image Source, the Browse All Images dialog box opens with the operating system or image source options (To create windows machine, select windows Image)
  • Choose instance type: Select Virtual Machine or Bare Metal Machine.
  • When you click Change Shape, the Browse All Shapes dialog box opens with a list of the virtual machine (VM) or bare metal shapes that are available for the instance type that you selected.

Create_Linux_Machine

  • Add SSH key: The public key portion of the key pair that you want to use for SSH access to the instance. You can drag and drop single key files into the box.

Note: SSH Keys are required only for Linux Machine and not for Windows Machine.

To know how to generate the SSH keys, please download the free Guide from here

SSH Keys

Note: If you are new to Networking, & want to learn more about the Networking Basic Concepts like VCN, Subnet, Security List, IGW, DRG. Then please check here

VCN in OCI

Once you click Create, you will see your Compute Linux Instance will start provisioning, & its status will change to Available in few minutes

Compute_Instance

Instance in OCI

After the instance is provisioned, details about it appear in the instance list. To view additional details, including IP addresses, click the instance name.

5) Now, you can connect to the Linux Machine with its Public IP

Note: If you created your Database with the Public Subnet then only you will get the Public IP

Connect To the Linux Machine

You can connect to a running instance by using a Secure Shell (SSH) for Linux or Remote Desktop connection for Windows. To connect to a Linux instance from your Laptop, you can download a free SSH client called PuTTY from here

Enter the Public IP Address in the Hostname, then add the SSH Private key under SSH & then Auth. Click Open

Adding Private Key in PUTTY

Well that was on How to create & Connect Windows/Linux O.S. on Oracle Cloud (OCI)

We cover Compute in the detailed version in our 8 weeks Program for  [1Z0-932] Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect Training, in which cover beginner to advanced topics to clear the Certification Exam

EBS Cloud Manager: New Release 19.1.1 Separation Of Duties

$

0

The New release (19.1.1) of Oracle E-Business Suite Cloud Manager is now available, that brings new security features for EBS (R12) on Cloud

In this post, I will cover:

  • What is this new Security Feature?
  • What is EBS Cloud Manager & How to Deploy it on Oracle’s Gen 2 Cloud
  • How to Update Existing EBS Cloud Manager VM
  • What is Compartment & Policy in IAM
  • How to Design your compartment & Policy in this new Security feature.

Separation of Duties in EBS CM

One of the most important features which I found useful from the Security point of view is the Separation of Duties. Before I explain What is Separation of Duties & how it implemented using Compartment, lets first have a look at What is EBS Cloud Manager & how it is important for an Apps DBA & Architect to know.

What is EBS Cloud Manager?

As an Oracle Apps DBA, EBS Architect  it is important for you to know about EBS Cloud Manager.

EBS Cloud Manager

EBS CLoud Manager is a Virtual Machine that centrally manages all your EBS Environments on the cloud.
Using EBS Cloud Manager you can do:

  • One-Click & Advanced Provisioning using HA
  • Fast Clone
  • Backup & Recovery
  • Lift & Shift (Migration)

Where to Get EBS Cloud Manager?

1) Log in to the Oracle Cloud account, go to the OCI Console.
Note: If you haven’t registered for the Oracle Cloud Free Trial account yet, then, please Download Step by Step Activity Guide to Register for Oracle Cloud Trial Account

2) From the navigation menu, click on Marketplace

Navigation to Marketplace

3) In this Marketplace, you will get the EBS CM image as well as all the Oracle provided Images & partners

EBS CM Image

4) Simply click on launch instance & it will create a Linux Machine inside your OCI Console using which you can then create or provision other EBS environment, also manage EBS.

Version Details & launch Instance

Roles & Tasks

When you deploy or build your EBS Environment:

First, you define the Network, this task was done by the Network Administrator, then you define or set up the EBS Cloud Manager & this is done by the EBS CM Administrators. Once you have the network set up then you build your production, Test, QA or Dev environment & these are done by EBS Administrators (Apps DBAs)

Till now all these 3 tasks were done by a single team because there was no separation of Duties possible in EBS Cloud Manager.

With the latest release (19.1.1) Oracle has introduced a Separation of Duties, which means you have 3 different roles, you will define the appropriate privileges & permissions & then the responsible team will pick the task accordingly

Different Roles

In order to understand this, you will have to understand Compartments, Groups, how to apply a security Policy on a compartment & attach to a group

Let’s discuss these basic concepts first

What is Compartment?

A compartment is a logical container to organize & secure Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Resources (such as compute, storage, network, load balancer, etc) and you apply IAM policies to that compartment, which restricts who can use the resources created within that compartment

To know more about the Compartment, check here

compartment

What is Policy?

A policy specifies who can access which Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Resources (Compute, VCN, Object Storage, Database, etc). A policy allows a group to work in certain ways with specific types of resources under a particular compartment

  • Policies are comprised of one or more statements.
  • It specifies which groups can access what resources. Also, it plays a role in the level of access users have in a particular group.
  • Policy, attached to a group defines who can access what under a Tenancy or Compartment.

Policies are written in human-readable format:

  • Allow group <group_name> to <verb> <resource-type> in tenancy.
  • Allow group <group_name> to <verb> <resource-type> in compartment <compartment_name> [where <conditions>]

When you create a policy you must attach it to a compartment (or the tenancy, which is the root compartment). Where you attach it controls who can then modify it or delete it.

Policy

3 Different Roles for Managing E-Bussiness Suite

  • Network Administrators: Design the Network(VCN, Subnet, Load Balancer, etc)
  • EBS Cloud Manager Administrators: Group of Users who will manage the EBS Cloud Manager
  • EBS/Application DBA’s: Create & manage the Production, Dev, QA environment

Separation of Duties

So according to this, you need to have 3 set Groups & Compartments so that the policy which you will create can be applied on specific Compartments

EBS CM Design

Now whatever I have covered today, We build this using step by step guide as part of Hands-On Lab in my training program “Build, Managed & Migrate EBS (R12) on Oracle Cloud” other step by step activity guides include-

  • Setting Up Network for EBS Cloud Manager & EBS Environments
  • Deploying EBS Cloud Manager
  • Building EBS Environments on Cloud
  • Cloning EBS on CLoud using FastClone
  • Configuring Load Balancer
  • Securing using SSL / TLS with Load Balancer
  • Lift & Shift (Migration) from On-Premise To Cloud

While accessing the forms in Oracle E-Buisness Suite R12 on MAC OS using firefox we hit an issue in which the forms were not opening. This post covers how to fix it using Java Web Start

Why we were having issue with the forms?

As you all know Netscape Plug-in Application Programming Interface (NPAPI) is no longer supported because of its security concern, Chrome disables it in April 2015, Firefox supported it till version 52.x, Apple removing support for NPAPI from Safari 12. As we all know Oracle plans to deprecate the Java Plug-in for web browsers starting with the release of Java SE 9.

Three of the most popular browser stopped the support of NPAPI, there is another workaround by using Java Web Start.

What is Java Web Start?

Java Web Start provides an independent architecture for deploying Java-based applications on the client desktop. Live Java Applet in Java Web Start, users can launch a Java application by clicking the link on a web page. The link opens a Java Network Launch Protocol (JNLP) file, which instructs the Java Web Start software to download and run the application.

EBS 12.1 java forms NPAPI plugin patches oracle webstart web start JNLP

Recommended Java version to use?

If you require for multiple Forms session support and support for macOS then JRE 8 Update 181 or newer is prefered.

With no further due let’s see what patches should be applied to get Java Web Start rolling.

FIX:

1. Oracle Forms 10g Technology Patch for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1

Patch 25441839 –  For Bugs 24946444, 24620875, 25355211 is the minimum required Oracle Forms 10g overlay patch that adds support for Java Web Start to Oracle Forms as part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack.

Before you begin applying any patches make sure to shut down application tier services:

Stop Application Tier

  1. Connect to application user applmgr and Source the application environment file
  2. Go to scripts home with command  cd $ADMIN_SCRIPTS_HOME
  3. Run the script to stop the services: ./adstpall.sh apps/apps

NOTE: Before applying any patch make sure you check all the prerequisites patches are applied or not.  Use this command to check if the patch is already applied or not: opatch lsinventory | grep 25441839 replace the patch number with the patch number you are trying to check.

Apply these patches using opatch utility. Always go through the readme file to check if there are any prerequisites patches if there are make sure you apply all the prerequisite patches first before proceeding with the main patch.

Instructions for applying the Application Technology Patches using adpatch utility.

  1. Connect to application user applmgr and Source the application environment file
  2. Set your current directory to the directory where the patch is located
  3. then apply the patch using the command: opatch apply

2. Application Technology Patches for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1

Before applying these patches you need to enable maintenance mode

  1. Connect to application user applmgr and Source the application environment file
  2. Run adadmin utility to Enable Maintenance Mode by using the command: adadmin
  3. It will ask you a few things before taking you to AD Administration Main Menu.
  4. In AD Administration Main Menu You should see Change Maintenance Mode enter the number associated with it and hit Enter.
  5. Now in Change Maintenance Mode enter the number associated to Enable Maintainance mode and hit Enter.
  6. Now Return to Main Menu by entering the number associated with it.
  7. Now Exit AD Administration by entering the number associated with it.

Instructions for applying the Application Technology Patches using adpatch utility.

  1. Connect to application user applmgr and Source the application environment file
  2. Run adpatch utility by using the command: adpatch
  3. It will ask you a few things before taking you to Patching.
  4. Enter the directory location of the patch when prompted for example:  The default directory is [/home/applmgr11] : /stage/oracle/ebs/ patches/24693065
  5. Enter the name of the AutoPatch driver file when prompted for example: Please enter the name of your AutoPatch driver file : u24693065.drv
  6. Now it will ask you for the number of workers to use, this totally depends upon the processor the machine is using.

NOTE: Before applying any patch make sure you check all the prerequisites patches are applied or not.  Use this command to check if the patch is already applied or not: Select bug_number from apps.ad_bugs where bug_number=’&1′;  and then enter the patch number you want to check.

1. AD: Add Java Web Start support to Oracle E-Business Suite Patch 24498616: R12.AD.B

[Solved] OCI Load Balancer Throwing Error: 502 Bad Gateway

$

This post covered an issue encountered by a lot of our trainees While Creating Load Balancer on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure(OCI). Also, we have covered an overview of Load Balancer in Oracle Cloud (OCI)

This blog discusses the symptoms, the root cause (502 Bad Gateway) and the fix of this prevalent issue.

Before moving into the Issue & its Fix, Lets first understand the Overview of Load Balancer

Overview Of Load Balancer In Oracle Cloud (OCI)

Load Balancer provides automated traffic distribution from one entry point to multiple servers in VCN or Load balancer automatically distributes traffic to list healthy backend servers based on

  • Health Check Policy
  • Load Balancing Policy

Where Health Check Policy is a test to confirm the availability of backend servers & a load balancing policy tells the load balancer how to distribute incoming traffic to the backend servers.

Load Balancer In Oracle Cloid Infrastructure

Type Of Load Balancer In Oracle Cloud (OCI)

1)Public Load Balancer: To accept traffic from the internet, you create a public load balancer. The service assigns it a public IP address that serves as the entry point for incoming traffic. You can associate the public IP address with a friendly DNS name through any DNS vendor.

2)Private Load Balancer: To isolate your load balancer from the internet and simplify your security posture, you can create a private load balancer. The Load Balancing service assigns it a private IP address that serves as the entry point for incoming traffic.

(Note: If you are just starting on Oracle Cloud or new to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), then I would suggest you check our previous post on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) which covers the basic concepts i.e. Region, AD, Tenancy, Compartment, VCN, IAM, Compute, Storage Service, etc)

To create a minimal system with a functioning load balancer, you must:

  • For a public load balancer, create a VCN with an internet gateway and a public regional subnet.
  • For a private load balancer, create a VCN with at least one private subnet.
  • Create at least two Compute instances, each in a separate availability domain.
  • Next Step, Create a load balancer.
  • After that, Create a backend set with a health check policy.
  • Add backend servers (Compute instances) to the backend set.
  • Create a listener, with optional SSL handling.
  • Update the load balancer subnet security list so it allows the intended traffic.

To know more on What Is Load Balancer In Oracle Cloud (OCI) & How To Create

Issue & Fix

Once the Load Balancer is fully configured, While testing its functionality by navigating to its Public IP address on a web browser, some of the trainees are facing below error

“502 Bad Gateway”

Load Balancer Issue

Cause:

It could be through the number of reasons:

1) First Check, If your Compute Instance (Web servers) is Up & Running or not.

Webservers

2) Check if the Httpd server is Up or not

Status of httpd server

3) Make Sure the Health of the Load Balancer Should be OK

Load Balancer

4) The issue is also caused by there being no healthy backend servers available during the time period in which the errors occur.

This post covers recent enhancement in  Oracle Autonomous Database on 26th April 2019 which is the introduction of the Access Control List.

If you are new to Autonomous Database, I would suggest you check my previous, where I covered in detail about Autonomous Database & steps to creating an Autonomous Database in Oracle cloud

Access Control List in Autonomous Database

  • With the introduction of the Access Control List, now you can only allow the particular IP address to access your Autonomous Database and by this functionality, you will be adding an extra layer of security to your Autonomous Database.
  • Initially, when you create an Autonomous Database On Oracle Cloud, you don’t have any active Access Control List, however, after it gets created successfully you can either use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure console, API, or CLI to create an ACL for your Autonomous Database database by adding a minimum of one entry to the list.
  • An Access Control List entry can be a comma-separated list of CIDR blocks or public IP addresses.
  • To know what is CIDR check here

Steps To Restrict Access To Your autonomous Database Using ACL

1. Open the navigation menu. Under Database, click Autonomous Transaction Processing or Autonomous Data Warehouse.

Autonomous Database

2. Choose your Compartment & Select  your Autonomous Database

To know more about Compartment check here

Note: ACL is applicable for Both ATP & ADW

Steps To Restrict Access To Your autonomous Database Using ACL

3. In the list of Autonomous Databases, click on the display name of the database you wish to administer

Autonomous Database Using Access Control List

4. Hover over the Actions button, and then click Access Control List.

Autonomous Database

5. Add or modify entries, as applicable.

To add CIDR blocks or public IP addresses of clients that can access the database, click + Additional Entry, and then select the IP notation type and enter a comma-separated list of values.

To remove the ACL, simply delete all entries in the list. This action allows all clients to connect to the database.

Autonomous Database

6. Click Update

Hope you find this blog a good source of learning in Autonomous Database, stay tuned for my upcoming post where I will be discussing more on Autonomous Database.

In this post, we are going to cover the issue and its fix that one of our trainees was facing this issue while accessing Oracle EBS R12.1.3 application. They were getting this error java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class oracle.apps.fnd.profiles.Profiles.

The following error occurred after patching EBS to 12.1.3 don’t worry we have got you covered in this blog.

Let’s check in the error log why this happened, go to $IAS_ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/oacore/logs and check the log file

Error:

Request URI:/OA_HTML/AppsLocalLogin.jsp

Exception:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class oracle.apps.fnd.profiles.Profiles

Solution:

There are two ways in which the issue can be resolved now.

1. We can resolve this issue by Bouncing the database on each node in case of RAC.

OR

2. You can make below changes in application and bounce services:

1. Backup the Jserv.properties file. (Backing up the original file is the best practice, if anything goes sideways you can restore the original state of the system.)

2. changing the value of the LONG_RUNNING_JVM=  parameter from “true” to “false” in Jserv.properties file.

grep -i wrapper.bin.parameters=-DLONG_RUNNING_JVM Jserv.properties
wrapper.bin.parameters=-DLONG_RUNNING_JVM=false

3. Stoping adapactl.sh stop (To ensure that all the serves are stoped)

cd $COMMON_TOP/admin/scripts/$CONTEXT_NAME
adapactl.sh stop

4. Clearing server-level cache:

cd $COMMON_TOP
mv _pages _pages_09July2014
mkdir _pages

5. Clearing modplsql caches:

cd  $IAS_ORACLE_HOME/Apache/modplsql/
mv cache cache_09July2014
cd cache
rm -rf *

6. Clearing Apache logs

cd $IAS_ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/
mv logs logs_09July2014
cd logs
rm - rf *

 Start Services:

Now try starting the services

cd $COMMON_TOP/admin/scripts/$CONTEXT_NAME
adapactl.sh start.

ISCSI-Attached Volumes Do Not Connect On Reboot (OCI)

$
0
0

In this post, I have discussed the issue & fixed encountered by our trainees as “After Rebooting the Instance Attached Block Volume Does Do Not Connect To The Instance” from our [1Z0-932] Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect

Before getting deep into the issue, first, let us understand What is Block Volume & iSCSI?

Block Volume

  • Block storage operates at the raw storage device level and manages data as a set of
numbered, fixed-size blocks using protocols such as iSCSI.
  • Block Volume Service lets you dynamically provision and manage block storage
    volumes.
  • You can create, attach, connect, and move volumes, as needed, to meet your storage
    and application requirements.

To know more about other storage options available in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure click here

iSCSI

In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure we can attach block volume to compute instance either by using iSCSI or Paravirtualized.

To know more about compute instance check our previous post on Create Compute (Linux/Windows Machine) On Oracle Cloud (OCI)

  • iSCSI: iSCSI is an acronym for Internet Small Computer Systems Interface, an Internet Protocol (IP)-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. It provides block-level access to storage devices by carrying SCSI commands over a TCP/IP network.
  • Paravirtualized: A virtualized attachment available for VMs.

Issue

When we rebooted the compute instance, that attached block volume was not showing up in the instance.

Reason

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure supports iSCSI attached remote boot and block volumes to Compute instances.
  • These iSCSI attached volumes are managed by the iscsid service.
  • In scenarios where this service is stopped for any reason, such as the service crashes or a system administrator inadvertently stops the service, it’s important that the iscsid service is automatically restarted to increase the stability of your infrastructure

Workaround

Update the Linux iSCSI Service to Restart Automatically

Step1: check the version of iscsid ” yum info iscsi-initiator-utils

OCI Block Volume ISCSI

OCI Block Volume ISCSI

Step2: Run the below command to update the iscsid service on your Oracle Linux instances  “sudo yum update -y iscsi-initiator-utils

After running this command, the version of the iscsid service should be 6.2.0.874 or newer. Hence iSCSI Service is configured to  Restart Automatically and your attached block volume will be there with the instance even after an instance reboot.

I hope you find this blog useful in troubleshooting your attached block volume issue and if you like the blog don’t forget to share it with your friends and colleagues.

Post your doubts in the comment section & Stay tuned for my future blogs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Commercial vs Government Region

There are two types of Regions:

  • Commercial
  • Government

Government regions are the one which doesn’t have public access and which are more secured, Federal compliant. The government data centers are different. Only government companies can access them with proper approvals. And this will be assigned by Oracle. As due to data sensitivity these data cannot be kept on the public cloud.

Unable to Install YUM on the Compute Instance in Oracle Cloud(OCI)

This post covers an issue faced by a lot of our trainees while Installing YUM on the Compute Instance.

In this blog, We discuss the symptoms, the root cause (Connection Timed Out) and the fix of this prevalent issue.

If you are just starting out in Cloud then I highly recommend you to go through these first

Issue

While Installing YUM on the Compute Instance, getting the error Connection Timed Out

  1. We are going to install an Apache HTTP Web server and try to connect to it over the public internet.

Apache HTTP Server is an open-source web server developed by the Apache Software Foundation. The Apache server hosts web content and responds to requests for this content from web browsers such as Chrome or Firefox.

YUM UpdateCause

This error comes up when your Instance does not have Internet Connectivity. that means it is not allowing the outside traffic.

Fix

  • Try pinging google.com on your Instance. If it is showing below output then your instance has an active Internet Connection.

Ping stats
If you are not Getting the Above Output then, follow the below steps:

To open the internet connectivity & allow traffic outside the VCN

  • Create an egrees Rule with the CIDR 0.0.0.0/0 to allow traffic outside the VCN

Egrees Rule

  • Set up one rule to route that traffic to a gateway on the VCN (for example, a DRG connected to your on-premises network or an internet gateway connected to the internet)

Note: Your VCN uses virtual route tables to send traffic out of the VCN (for example, to the internet, to your on-premises network, or to a peered VCN). These virtual route tables have rules that look and act like traditional network route rules you might already be familiar with. Each rule specifies a destination CIDR block and the target (the next hop) for any traffic that matches that CIDR

Hope this post helps you.
