In this digital era, gone are the days of using physical storage services. Thanks to the public cloud services and two of the biggest names in this domain which are AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Microsoft Azure.

As you know cloud computing enables companies to consume a  compute resource, such as a server, storage, or an application, as a utility like water or electricity, rather than having to build and maintain computing infrastructures in-house.

In this blog, we are going to compare both of these cloud giants and we also will discuss:

Overview Of AWS

  • Amazon  Web  Services  (AWS)  is a  subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies, and governments, on a paid subscription basis.
  • With more than 175 services AWS enables businesses and developers to use web services to build scalable, sophisticated applications.
  • AWS was launched in 2006 and has more experience in the cloud than any other cloud provider. AWS has successfully met the on-demand needs of enterprises in regards to the cloud computing platform.
  • AWS dominates the public cloud market with a 47.1%  market share. AWS is the most popular public cloud infra platform, comprising 41.5% of workloads.
  • AWS has 55 availability zones with 8 more on the way.
  • AWS certification is fast becoming the must-have certificate for any IT professional working with  Cloud.

Some popular clients of AWS include:

  • Netflix
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • ESPN
  • BBC

Overview of Azure

  • Azure is a cloud computing service created by Microsoft. It is a collection of various cloud computing services, including remotely hosted and managed versions of proprietary Microsoft technologies, and open technologies.
  • Being a strong competitor to AWS,  Azure was launched in 2010 and has a wide range of flexible offerings.
  • Azure draws on Microsoft’s vast data capacity to provide software, platform, and infrastructure as a service.
  • Azure currently holds 29.4% of the installed base, measured by application workload and a market share of 30%.
  • Azure has 44 availability zones with 12 more on the way.

Some popular clients of Azure include:

  • Samsung
  • Boeing
  • eBay
  • HP
  • Adobe

AWS Vs Azure DevOps

DevOps is not a tool or service, it is a methodology. Using this methodology the entire software development life cycle could be automated. It is the union of people, processes, and products to enable continuous delivery of value to the end-users. Both AWS and Azure aim to automate the software development lifecycle. Now let’s see the differences between the two cloud giants.

  • Infrastructure: AWS,  started scaling from the infrastructure from the beginning. Its approach has been to continually be ahead of the innovation curve and offer services that IT operations can easily comprehend and use to support their compute and storage requirements on-demand on the other hand Azure was built as a holistic platform and has been geared toward the enterprise from the beginning. It began as a platform as a service (PaaS), making it easier for developers to build applications without worrying about the servers on which they’re running.
  • Service Integration: AWS DevOps allows users to easily integrate AWS services like EC2, S3, and Beanstalk in just a few clicks while Azure DevOps allows users to integrate Azure services like Azure VM, Azure App Services, and SQL databases and also it’s even easier to integrate with third-party tools like Jenkins, as they have a huge eco-system for third party editions.
  • Managing Packages In a Software: If you take any software you will need a package manager like if you are working on Angular or any node-based framework you will surely need a node package manager and manage this NPM you will need a package manager. In AWS DevOps if you have to manage a package you need to integrate an external software or a third party software like Artifactory while Azure has a package manager tool called Azure Artifacts to manage the packages like Nuget, Maven, etc.
  • Best Feature: AWS DevOps can easily automate a complete code deployment with AWS services on the other hand Azure DevOps has Kanban boards, workflows, and a huge extension ecosystem

Which One To Choose?

The choice is fully yours but if you are considering the current market, every company is using AWS as a platform to perform DevOps tasks. No doubt AWS and Azure are the two top players in the cloud technology space because both are very good at what they provide for DevOps in different ways. Azure is rapidly gaining market share, but  AWS is still by far the largest cloud computing service provider in the world today. So I would highly recommend you to give the first priority to AWS.
