In this blog, we are going to cover Azure File share, Azure File sync, Creating File share in Azure.

Topics we’ll cover:

What is Azure File Share?

An Azure file share is a convenient place for cloud applications to write their logs, metrics, and crash dumps. Logs can be written by the application instances via the File REST API, and developers can access them by mounting the file share on their local machine.

Azure File Share is deployed into storage accounts, which are top-level objects that represent a shared pool of storage. This pool of storage can be used to deploy multiple file shares. Azure Files offers standard file shares which are hosted on hard disk-based (HDD-based) hardware, and premium file shares, which are hosted on solid-state disk-based(SSD-based) hardware.

What is Azure File Sync?

Azure File Sync is a service that allows you to cache several Azure file shares on an on-premises Windows Server or cloud VM. The files will be stored in the cloud in Azure File Shares.

Azure file shares can be used in two ways:

  1. Directly mounting these serverless Azure file shares (SMB).
  2. Caching Azure file shares on-premises using Azure File Sync.

Benefits of Azure File Sync

  1. Cloud tiering: With cloud tiering enabled, your most frequently accessed files are cached on your local server and your least frequently accessed files are tiered to the cloud. You can control how much local disk space is used for caching.
  2. Multi-site access and sync: Azure File Sync is ideal for distributed access scenarios. For each of your offices, you can provision a local Windows Server as part of your Azure File Sync deployment. Changes made to a server in one office automatically sync to the servers in all other offices.
  3. Business continuity and disaster recovery: Azure File Sync is backed by Azure Files, which offers several redundancy options for highly available storage. Because Azure contains resilient copies of your data, your local server becomes a disposable caching device, and recovering from a failed server can be done by adding a new server to your Azure File Sync deployment.
  4. Cloud-side backup: Azure Backup also integrates with your on-premises servers, so when you restore to the cloud, these changes are automatically downloaded on your Windows Servers.
