In this blog, I will share some quick tips including Q&A’s and useful links from Day 10 of our recently launched new batch of Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect(AZ-303/AZ-304)

On Day 10 Live Session we covered Azure Monitor, Azure Workbooks, Azure Alerts, Log Analytics, Network Watcher, Azure Service Health, Azure Application Insights.

We also covered hands-on Lab 5 out of our 25+ extensive labs(AZ-303).

Also on Day 9 Live Session, we covered Azure Container Instance, Azure Kubernetes Service(AKS), Azure App Service, Azure App Service Plan, Azure Logic App, Azure Web App, Deployment Slot of Azure Web App, Azure Functions.

The Previous week in Day 8 Live Session, we covered Azure Migrate, Azure Migration Prerequisites/Process, Azure Backup, Azure to Azure Site Recovery.

So, here are some of the Q&A asked during the Live session from Module 15: Implement Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring.

Azure Monitor

Azure Monitor is the local monitoring solution for Azure, and when we are using Azure or doing anything, it’s present in the background collecting data for you. Metrics and logs are collected by Azure monitor from all of your Azure resources and used to create alerts, monitor, troubleshoot issues, performance and create dashboards so that you have full visibility of your Azure estate and a means to act when problems arise.

Q1: Can Azure Monitor monitor on-premises resources?

Ans: Yes, in addition to collecting monitoring data from Azure resources, Azure Monitor can collect data from virtual machines and applications in other clouds and on-premises.

Q2: How do I access Azure Monitor?

Ans: You can access all Azure Monitor features and data from the Monitor menu in the Azure portal. The Monitoring section of the menu for different Azure services provides access to the same tools with data filtered to a particular resource.

Azure Workbooks

Workbooks are another feature that lies under Azure Sentinel which falls under Threat Management which is something you must consider for visualizing your data in Azure Sentinel more accurately. But the actual power of workbooks is the ability to combine data from disparate sources within a single report.

Workbooks

Ans: Yes, To print a workbook, or save it as a PDF, use the options menu to the right of the workbook title.

  1. Select options >  Print content.
  2. In the print screen, adjust your print settings as needed or select Save as PDF to save it locally.

Azure Alerts

Alerts enthusiastically notify you when issues are found with your infrastructure or application using your monitoring data in Azure Monitor. They permit you to analyze and address problems before the users of your system notice them. These alert rules are separated from alerts and the actions taken when an alert fires.

Q4: What is an action group in Azure Alerts?

Ans: An action group is a collection of notifications and actions that can be triggered by an alert. Multiple alerts can use a single action group allowing you to leverage common sets of notifications and actions.

Log Analytics

Log Analytics is the primary tool in the Azure portal for writing log queries and interactively analyzing their results. Even if a log query is used elsewhere in Azure Monitor, you’ll typically write and test the query first using Log Analytics.

You can start Log Analytics from several places in the Azure portal. The scope of the data available to Log Analytics is determined by how you start it. See Query Scope for more details.

  • Select Logs from the Azure Monitor menu or Log Analytics workspaces menu.
  • Select Logs from the Overview page of an Application Insights application.
  • Select Logs from the menu of an Azure resource.

Q5: Can I delete data from a Log Analytics workspace?

Ans: Data is removed from a workspace according to its retention period. You can delete specific data for privacy or compliance reasons.

Network Watcher

Azure Network Watcher provides tools to monitor, diagnose, view metrics, and enable or disable logs for resources in an Azure virtual network. Network Watcher is designed to monitor and repair the network health of IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) products which includes Virtual Machines, Virtual Networks, Application Gateways, Load balancers, etc. Note: It is not intended for and will not work for PaaS monitoring or Web analytics.

Network Watcher

Q6:How do I enable Network Watcher?

Ans: The Network Watcher service is enabled automatically for every subscription that contains virtual networks.

Q7: What is the NetworkWatcherRG?
Ans: Network Watcher resources are located in the hidden NetworkWatcherRG resource group which is created automatically. For example, the NSG Flow Logs resource is a child resource of Network Watcher and is enabled in the NetworkWatcherRG.

Azure Service Health

Azure Service Health notifies you about Azure service incidents and planned maintenance so you can take action to mitigate downtime. Configure customizable cloud alerts and use your personalized dashboard to analyze health issues, monitor the impact on your cloud resources, get guidance and support and share details and updates.

Service Health

Q8: What is the difference between Service Health and Resource Health?

Ans: Resource Health provides information about the health of your individual cloud resources, such as a specific virtual machine instance. Service Health provides a personalized view of the status of your Azure services and regions, as well as information about current incidents, planned maintenance and health advisories.

Q9: What should I do when I am experiencing a service incident?

Ans: First, check Service Health to see if there is a known incident affecting you. If so, simply monitor it for any updates; Azure will publish more information there as soon as they have it. If you believe you are affected by an issue not listed in Service Health, please create a support request.

Monitor Azure Costs

The costing dashboard helps users to know the current expenses of their subscriptions and minimizes the cost of the subscription for the better utilization of the expenses. It helps users to reduce the cost underlying services of the subscription-based on the services, which are being utilized by the subscription owner. It also gives recommendations for the rightsizing on the basis of utilization of the services under the subscription, which helps users to give a direction for managing the cost of the services of subscription.

Azure Application Insights

Application Insights, a feature of Azure Monitor, is an extensible Application Performance Management (APM) service for developers and DevOps professionals. Use it to monitor your live applications. It will automatically detect performance anomalies and includes powerful analytics tools to help you diagnose issues and to understand what users actually do with your app.

Q10: How many Application Insights resources should I deploy

Ans: When you are developing the next version of a web application, you don’t want to mix up the Application Insights telemetry from the new version and the already released version. To avoid confusion, send the telemetry from different development stages to separate Application Insights resources,
